THE KALASHNIKOV MUSEUM IN THE INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL CONTEXT

The Fifth International Scientific Conference “The World of Weapons. History. Heroes. Collections.” had been held in Tula from 16 to 18 October, 2019. The organizer of the conference, as usual, was the Tula State Museum of Arms. The conference program consisted of the round table, thematic sections and scientific discussions. Over 100 participants attended the conference: scientists, museum workers, archives and libraries staff, collectors and weapons history experts from all over Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Spain and Canada. The representatives of the Kalashnikov Museum and Exhibition Complex of Small Arms were Lada Mikhailova, the head of the exhibition department, with the report about the role of Izhevsk Scientific Research Institute and its research affiliate in Tula in modernization of Izhevsk weapons production in the 1960s-1970s and Vadim Khokhlov, Junior Researcher, who told about the production of hunting carbines “Saiga” at Izhmash in 1992-2002. The international museum community received the reports with great interest and enthusiasm. Such an influential magazine as “Technologies and Weapons: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” requested these reports to be published.

Besides, the delegation of the Kalashnikov Museum took part in the First Russian Festival of Local Brands of Culture “Live Heritage”. The festival had been held from 18 to 19 October on the platform of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation and presented the best practices of local culture and domestic tourism development. During the round table named “How to Develop a City, Saving Cultural Heritage. Russian and European Experience. Law and Practice.” Lada Mikhailova presented her report “Self-Actualization of the City through a Famous Person’s Name. Practices of Izhevsk and the Kalashnikov Museum and Exhibition Complex of Small Arms”.
